Four quick fixes for a drafty home
Jan 10, 2024

On Thursday, Ariel and I returned home from a 2-week trip with our boys to India where the average temperature sat around 80 degrees. You can imagine the welcome home feeling we had when the sliding doors at JFK opened up and and a freezing wind blasted us in the face as we dragged our suitcases and kids to our car!
Given the temps out over the past few days (and how it appears it will stay for a few more), I thought it would be helpful to share a few quick actions that I take for my own home to stay warm and save on energy bills:
1. Check your fuel levels:
Take a quick look at your oil or propane tank gauge to make sure you have enough fuel. Try to refill when it gets down to about 30% to avoid any chilly surprises.
2. Insulate your windows:
Grab a window insulation kit from your local store. It’s a simple fix that involves sealing your windows with plastic film. Here's one that I use for some of the draftier windows in my home.
3. Install door sweeps:
Temporarily, you can roll up a towel or use one of these portable stoppers, but we'd recommend permanently installing a door sweep like this one to block drafts more effectively.
4. Adjust your curtains:
Open your curtains during the day to let the sunlight naturally warm your home, and close them at night to keep the heat in. It’s like giving your home a little hug of warmth.
Longer-term, properly insulating your home (particularly your attic and basement) with a professional insulation company can be a really powerful way to make your home more comfortable year-round.
